日本人建築家、篠原一男の作品集。本書は、日本の伝統的な民家や寺院といったヴァナキュラー建築に見られる要素を住宅建築に応用した作者の初期の名作「から傘の家（UMBRELLA HOUSE）」に焦点を当てた一冊。スイス・チューリッヒを拠点とする建築事務所「DEHLI GROLIMUND」を主宰する、クリスチャン・デリ（Christian Dehli）とアンドレア・グロリムンド（Andrea Grolimund）が編集を務める。

1961年に東京で建設された「から傘の家」は、建築家であり数学者でもある作者が設計した最小の住宅である。建設から約60年経った2020年、幸運にも取り壊しを免れ、スイスの家具メーカー「ヴィトラ（Vitra）」が継承することとなった。作者のアーカイブを管理する東京工業大学をはじめ、日・欧両側の専門家陣によるサポートと監修のもと、解体から移送、移築、修復、再建を経て、2022年ドイツのヴァイル・アム・ラインにある「ヴィトラ キャンパス（Vitra Campus）」の地で完成、保存されている。

本書では、1960年代当時の日本の痕跡、設計図や図面、解体から新天地での組み立ての過程を記録した写真など、豊富な資料を通してこの建築物の長い軌跡を辿ることができる。

ほかにも、建築家の西沢立衛（Sejima and Nishizawa and Associates / SANAA）、建築設計・都市設計などを専門に教鞭を執る奥山信一、建築史家、作家であり同じく教鞭を執るデイビッド・B・スチュワート（David B. Stewart）が交わした討論を収録。1960年代から現在に至るまでの建築論を背景にこの建築物について語る。

作者は戦後の日本において最も偉大かつ影響力のある建築家の一人として活躍。東京工業大学では教授を務め、「シノハラ・スクール」として知られる同校の篠原研究室は、坂本一成、長谷川逸子、安田幸一ら現代建築家を輩出し、伊東豊雄にも影響を与えた。2005年「日本建築学会賞大賞」を授賞、没後の2010年「ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ国際美術展（Venice Biennale）」が生前の業績に対し特別記念金獅子賞を贈っている。

The story of Shinohara’s exquisite modernist gem, a residential home drawing on Japanese vernacular and religious architecture.

Built in Tokyo in 1961, the Umbrella House is the smallest residential home created by Japanese architect and mathematician Kazuo Shinohara. More than 60 years later, a stroke of good fortune made it possible to save the Umbrella House from demolition and move it to a new location, where it now stands on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany. The wooden house’s post-and-beam construction references traditional Japanese domestic and temple architecture. Experts from Japan and Europe supervised the dismantling of the house in Tokyo and its reassembly in Weil am Rhein.
This concise volume traces the long journey of the Umbrella House, in lavish illustrations including impressions from 1960s Japan, architectural designs and plans, and photographs documenting its dismantling and reassembly at its new location. Texts by Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), Shin-ichi Okuyama and David B. Stewart discuss the Umbrella House against the background of Japanese architectural discourse between 1960 and the present.
