CY TWOMBLY. ŒUVRES GRAPHIQUES (1973-1977) by Cy Twombly

21世紀を代表するヴァージニア州生まれのアメリカ人アーティスト、サイ・トゥオンブリー（Cy Twombly）の作品集。1928年にレキシントンに生まれ、2011年にローマで亡くなった作者が美術の勉強を始めたのは、ちょうど前衛芸術集団「ニューヨーク・スクール（New York School）」で抽象表現主義が主流となり始めた頃である。最初から作者はどこまでも自由なスタイルを用いて自己を発信し、ジェスチャーを重要視するグラフィックな表現に文字や数字、形、自身のサインまでもを含む記号を刻み、組み合わせていた。泥やシミや色とりどりの縞が合わさった全体像は壮大ならくがきのようにも見え、無駄がなく、肉感的で、常に批評家たちを戸惑わせてきた。

1957年に作者はローマへと移住し、あまりにも魅力的であった古代の文化へと熱中していった。それは徐々に作品へと浸透していき、文章の欠片や固有名詞からその存在が伺われるようになり、古代のギリシャやローマの神話や古代ないし前ロマン主義の作家たちを「呼び起こすというよりも加護を祈る」ものとなる。

独特の震えと恍惚的な不規則性を持つ作者の筆使いは、時間と歴史に挑むかのように、最も古めかしいものと現代に用いられる形を一筆で融合させている。形式主義から最も遠くに位置づけられた作品群は、超越したものを前にした魂の動きをとびきり肉感的に生命力を伝達し続ける身体が用いる、哀切で不思議な言語へ密に変換していったものなのである。

「ポンピドゥー・センター（Centre Georges Pompidou）」の「国立近代美術館（MNAM）」でグラフィック・アート・セクションを担当するチーフ・キュレーター、ジョナ・ストルヴス（Jonas Storvse）、「グルノーブル美術館（Musée de Grenoble）」の館長、ギー・トサト（Guy Tosatto）と、同美術館の近現代のアート・コレクションのチーフ・キュレーターであるソフィー・ベルナール（Sophie Bernard）が編集を手がけた。

An American artist born in Lexington in 1928 and who died in Rome in 2011, Cy Twombly began his artistic studies at a time when the abstract expressionism of the New York School was taking hold. From the outset, Twombly asserted himself through a style of great freedom, combining a graphic expression in which gesture takes precedence, with the inscription of signs such as letters, numbers, figures or even his own signature... The whole appears, with its dirt, stains and streaks of color, like sublime scribbles, taut and sensual, which never fail to baffle the critics.

In 1957, he moved to Rome, eager to immerse himself in the ancient culture that so fascinated him. It gradually infused his work, manifesting itself in snatches of phrases or proper names, "invoking rather than evoking" Greco-Latin mythology and ancient or pre-Romantic authors.

His stroke, with its inimitable tremor and ecstatic ramblings, seems to defy time and history, uniting in a single gesture the most archaic forms with those of modernity. Far from any formalism, his work is an intimate translation of the soul's movements in the face of that which transcends it, in a poignant, enigmatic language in which the body, in an eminently sensual mode, constantly imparts its vital energy.
